WALKING · 6 MIN READ

A path before the day begins

The best part of an early walk is how little it asks of you.

Before the streets become busy, a familiar path can feel like somewhere new. The pale light draws out details that disappear at noon: dew caught on the edge of a leaf, a low wall still cool from the night, the outline of a hill beyond the roofs.

I like to begin without a destination. A short route is enough if there is time to notice it. Along the meadow, the grass bends in different directions as the wind moves through. A small bird waits on a fence post. Nothing here needs to be collected or turned into a plan.

Walking slowly changes the scale of a morning. The things that seemed urgent indoors can usually wait another twenty minutes. A stretch of quiet ground gives them somewhere to settle.

The way home is often the same way out, but the light has shifted. I return with muddy shoes, a clearer head, and one small observation to carry into the rest of the day.
